DIY Diva: Giving yourself a salon quality pedicure

EssieLife's not fair. Some women get weekly mani-pedi's. In my world, this is a once in a blue moon treat.

But that's no excuse for fugly toes. With a few simple tricks, you can achieve salon-worthy tootsies at home:

1) Use high quality products, like O.P.I. and Essie polishes. They only cost a few dollars more and are well worth the investment for better coverage and more interesting colors.

2) Never skip a high gloss top coat. People see your feet from a Opieiffel_4distance of five-plus feet, so the perfect cuticle hardly gets noticed. But shine really makes a difference and protects against chips, the horror of horrors.

My favorite place to buy polish is Buy Best Beauty Supply on south MacDill, which has been keeping women pretty in south Tampa for more than 20 years. It has a better selection of colors and brands than many spas.

Give yourself time to browse: O.P.I. hues are stocked in every color you can imagine, including the new France collection for fall. I counted more than than 150 shades in Essie polish, whose brights are always pitch-perfect for summer. The Orly line features my new favorite pink, Cupcake.

Best of all, the prices: $7.99 per bottle for O.P.I.; $6.49, Essie; $5.49, Orly.

You can pick up other beauty supplies too, from deluxe flat-irons to PureOlogy, Aveda and Redken products, some in bulk sizes. When you're done, head next door to the Write Stuff, one of my guilty indulgences, to shop for fine stationery and some of the cutest baby gifts in town.
