Dressing for Christmas: Down with bells!

SantaandmeMy parents always had pretty good taste. When I was 7, I tried to leave the house with NO PANTS, just a long shirt and lace trimmed tights. Mom set me straight, explaining the virtue in not being a tacky skeeve.

In that same caring vein, they never stuffed me into humiliating holiday clothes. Take this photo, for instance. That's me on the left, dressed stylishly for the season in fierce red tights and a matching knit. That's my older brother on the right, who will likely smother me in my sleep for posting this. That's Santa in the middle, who seems plastered off his face and ready to snap. Ah, the holidays...

Not everyone opts for a subtle bow skirt. Holiday sweaters are a cruel fact of life. They are rarely tasteful. They are covered in cotton balls, bells, glitter and LED lights. In my nightmares, they are paired with matching bow-jingle bell earrings and Christmas socks (highwater pants implied).

Break free! Instead of being creepy with Santa's face across your chest, choose a sweater in a nice festive color. Here's a great one on sale from New York and Company. If you want it to live for seasons to come, invest in cashmere like this one from Macy's, also on a great sale. If you simply must wear something seasonal, try this sterling silver snowflake pendant, $14.99 from Target.

Mark_darcy_3Another option: If you have a faceload of terrifying sweaters under your bed like my husband Mark Darcy here, and an ironic sense of humor, wear the crap out of it at the Ugly Christmas Sweater Party at Push Ultra Lounge in St. Pete on Sunday. Ugly sweater owners get half off the bar tab! Now there's something Santa (see above) would appreciate.
