Express yourself: Monocle necklaces rock!

I love it when our coworkers and friends serve as fashion inspiration.

Take fellow Times reporter Kim Wilmath. She just returned from Paris with a funky vintage handbag in tow. Her first day back, she also sported a monocle necklace, like the one Madonna wore in the "Express Yourself" video.Expressyourself

I figured Kim's necklace also came from the City of Lights. But no. The resourceful fashionista plucked her one-eyed spec from her grandmother's house and, voila!, grandma's antique became instant chic when paired with a basic tee and a pencil skirt. (No lacy gloves or cone bra top on this classy gal!)

Her look felt fresh and cost her nothing, a double whammy of accessory brillance!

For gems of your own, take Kim's lead and rummage through your older relatives' jewelry boxes and closets for some homegrown vintage. If you come up empty, check out antique stores and flea markets for monocle necklaces.

Or you can go old school with newer reproductions, like this pretty piece from Urban Outfitters or this one spied on eBay.
