On an innocent mother-daughter jaunt to Prime Outlets Ellenton yesterday, I witnessed a dangerous sight. Sale signs all over the COACH outlet stores, kate spade -- and Dooney & Burke too -- which are lined up next to each other in a little corridor of handbag heaven.
Purses were flying off the shelves at the Coach outlet stores, where clearance bags were an additional 50 percent off.
At kate spade, the atmosphere was more subdued, but I suspect only because people did not realize what they were missing. Clearance prices were just that, and some real deals dotted the shelves. Plus, the store was taking 30 percent off the entire purchase.
My inner preppy girl has always loved kate spade. But the bags are so pricey, I generally dare not touch, just admire from afar at Nordstrom. The great exception: A knockoff that I bought on a street corner in NYC, which lasted all of three months.
But there are downright affordable options at the kate spade outlet. Really, you could pay more for some faux leather bags at department stores.
Sales reps at both the COACH and kate spade outlet stores said the deals have been going on for a while, and are expected to continue. But retail promos can vary from day to day, so call ahead before you make the trek out to Ellenton.
