Fancy do's -- at your own risk

Two lessons learned from my old prom pix:

prom.jpg1) Cement-stiff updos are as painful to view as they were to wear.

2) Less is more when it comes to hairspray, eyeshadow and cleavage.

Consider my humiliation your warning about the following deal: Cosmetic students at Tampa's Remington College are offering high schoolers free prom makeovers, from haircuts and updos to makeup and nails.

Free is free. But sometimes you get what you pay for.

My advice? Make your appointment early in the day, so there's time to shampoo and scrub if disaster strikes. Don't ask a student stylist for anything complicated. A blow-out and light makeup should be within their skill set.

The same tips apply to any student beauty service. At the Aveda Institute in St. Petersburg, I ended up tipping an instructor twice as much as my haircut cost to deflate the mushroom a student carved on my head. Now I'd only take advantage of their $12 cuts for a split-ends trim.

Prom-goers interested in the Remington College deal should call in advance for appointments at 813-316-4470. Prom services are offered April 8 to 16 at the Tampa campus, 6302 East Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd.

Any other tips for getting dolled up on the cheap? We wanna hear 'em!
