Grownup onesies? Say no to bodysuits, jumpsuits and rompers
The June/July 2009 issue of People Style Watch offers several takes on a trend that I just can't wrap my head around. I'm tallking about bodysuits, jumpsuits and rompers. Okay, so these aren't exactly the kind of bottom-snap onesies that infants wear, but still.
There's Katy Perry lounging in the bodysuit she designed (for a good cause) for H&M. I loved me some leotards back in my grade school ballet and gymnastics days, but how many self-respecting 20- or 30-somethings are going to endure that kind of unflattery now?
Turn the pages, and there is Top Chef's Padma Lakshmi decked out in a silver Marc Jacobs romper and gladiator sandals, a look that is much too space-agey for my taste. The mag calls these one-piece wonders "playful." I call them a fashion catastrophe for most body types. And the romper is actually my least un-favorite of this troubling trio of trends, for what it's worth.
Which brings us to the jumpsuit. Even with the cinched waist, skinny gals like Molly Sims end up looking awkward and disproportionate in these things. Yeah, the look retro all right. As in MC Hammer parachute pants retro, which is not exactly the vibe I think most fashionable chicks seek. You CAN touch this but, please, don't buy it.
