H&M gets with the program

For reasons not understood by modern America, the well-priced and fashionable Swedish retail giant H&M has been quietly opening shm-minilogo_twitter_reasonably_small.pngtores across the U.S. for the past decade, yet has never offered online shopping. The closest shop to the Tampa Bay area is at Florida Mall in Orlando, one of only a few in our humble state.

Which is a shame because H&M is a lovely place, filled with super-cheap but good quality replicas of the latest runway fashions. The retailer has scored collections from Karl Lagerfeld, Stella McCartney and Jimmy Choo and has great bathing suits and underthings as well.

Last week, H&M dropped an exciting bomb on us with this official tweet: "Good morning is an understatement! H&M has decided to have online shopping in the US at the turn of the year 2011/2012! Stay tuned for more."

hm.jpgWhaaaaaaattttttt????? Can you elaborate, H&M? Or are you just gonna  leave us hanging? I've scoured their Web site and press releases and haven't been able to reach anyone in the media office who can confirm that this isn't some cruel Twitter hacker messing with our emotions.

No more online shopping tweets have surfaced, and in fact, following H&M on Twitter is useless, as it's mainly a string of responses telling followers, "we're working on it," and "nope, we're not open in Kansas City yet."

And even if the tweet is true ... "turn of the year 2011/2012"? The internet could be obsolete by then! H&M, where have you been for the last 15 years? Besides, New York City, Los Angeles, London and Paris, I mean.

We'll stay tuned, for sure. (And thanks to the Diva reader who gave us this tip but chose to remain anonymous so her boss wouldn't find out she was digging up hot fashion gossip during work hours.)
