Jewelry to drool over at Gasparilla arts festival
I have a thing for the arts. I also have a thing for nice jewelry that won't break the bank. So I may be in trouble this weekend at the Gasparilla Festival of the Arts.
Art is not just something you hang on a wall. We wear it every day. More than three dozen artisans this weekend in downtown Tampa are showing off what their considerable talents bring to jewelry.
Craftsman art can also be surprisingly affordable for what you get. There's no point in making something by hand that doesn't use a quality stone and real silver or gold. Pieces can get pricey, but I recall seeing some stunning and distinctive necklaces at previous shows in the $50 to $100 range.
The beauty of an art show, of course, is that you never know what you will find until you get there. But for a hint, check out the website of the local artists in the show, Fatima Sharrieff and Anne Kantor, who happens to be a family friend. The sea glass ring, $55, above is by Sarasota artist Steve Palowski.
