Karl Lagerfeld for Macy's

karllagerfeld.jpgWhat does it say about the high-fashion-for-the-masses universe that Macy's is playing catch up to H&M, Target and Kohl's?

But give Macy's props for doing it right. The department store best known for Macy's coupons is launching this month a limited time capsule collection by none other designer Karl Lagerfeld.

As in Karl Lagerfeld of Chanel. And Fendi.

Now the titan's good taste will be accessible to those whose ATM statements run short on zeros. His Macy's collection will sell for $50 to $170. Mark your calendar for Aug. 31, the day they go on sale online and in Macy's stores nationwide, including those at Westshore, Countryside and Tyrone malls.

When Lagerfeld collaborated with H&M in 2004, the line sold out across Europe within hours. But Lagerfeld accused H&M of "snobbery created by anti-snobbery," according to Vogue, because the company produced insufficient quantities of his garments to meet the popular demand.

No doubt Macy's won't make that mistake. Here's a sneak peak of what to expect from the Macy's press release on its Karl Lagerfeld line: "The color palette ranges from soft to shocking pink and grey to noir. Collectible t-shirts and comfortable jackets mixed with crocodile print combine with chic leggings to give the collection a refreshing rock 'n' roll edge."

Elegant. Chic. Affordable. But can I use Macy's coupons to score an extra 20 percent off?
