L.L. Bean shearling flip-flops: What's the point?

Flipflops The other day my friend Judy, who retired from the St. Petersburg Times last year, sent me a Facebook message to express her bewilderment over something she'd seen in the latest L.L. Bean catalog: shearling flip-flops. Shearling, which I'll admit I had to look up, is sheep's skin with the wool left on. The sandals come in six colors and retail for $39.50.

Wrote Judy: "If it's cold enough that you have to wear shearling, isn't it too cold for flip-flops? (Or have I just become my mother?!)"Flipflopsred

I assured Judy that no, she wasn't being a fuddy-duddy. Wool sandals make no sense. This is another case of trying to adapt a trend for a warm climate, like wearing sleeveless sweaters or pairing Ugg boots with shorts.

Which leads me to these questions: (1) Under what circumstances would you wear shearling flip-flops? And (2) how much would you pay for them?
