The Man Repeller talks lipstick, turbans and "birth control glasses"
I wrote a story Thursday about a kiss between our incoming governor Rick Scott and his wife, Ann. It explored the age-old problem of ladies smoochin' lipstick on their guys, thereby fostering awkward wiping situations.
I interviewed Leandra Medine, a.k.a. the Man Repeller, about things that send guys packing (red lipstick is one, she says). Her blog is HYSTERICAL. It's only about six months old and it's going gangbusters, bringing in 7,000 hits a day. Pretty impressive for Leandra, a former Valentino intern who is 21 and in school studying journalism.
Man Repeller, for the record is this: outfitting oneself in a sartorially offensive way that will result in repelling members of the opposite sex. Such garments include but are not limited to harem pants, boyfriend jeans, overalls (see: human repelling), shoulder pads, full length jumpsuits, jewelry that resembles violent weaponry and clogs.
She totally celebrates it, by the way. Here is Leandra in a Man Repelling outfit, cherry lips and all:
I kept her on the phone for a few extra minutes Thursday with some questions. And guess what? Your reap the benefit, dear readers!
What made you start Man Repeller?
I always wanted to write a fashion blog. I worked in the industry and I loved fashion and wanted to create something that was unlike everything else. Because fashion trends have become so hated by men, this was such a perfect hook. Fashion keeps evolving and there’s something new every season. Fashion is always going to be about impressing a woman and not a man.
It takes a certain person to wear red lipstick, right?
I love it. I think it's good. I think it says a lot about a girl. If she's bold enough to wear it, maybe she's a little, not self-obsessed, but maybe has a little too much confidence. If you think about it, if you're wearing red lips and a black gown, you're sort of exuding this old Hollywood glam look like Camilla Belle, which is very beautiful. If you think about Chloe Sevigny with red lipstick and her birth control glasses and turban, it's repelling.
Is lipstick in general a Man Repeller?
Yes. I mean, because it's true. If you're wearing Chapstick and you kiss a guy, the Chapstick goes onto their mouth. It's annoying.
Do you dress like a Man Repeller?
Yeah, definitely. I totally dress to look cool, not to flatter my body.
I love Rick Owens, Karen Walker. Proenza Schouler is a huge inspiration. Balenciaga. John Paul Gaultier.
You’ve gotten popular really quickly.
Yes, I'm definitely getting a good response. I didn't think anyone would read it. I thought it would be something for me and my friends to laugh about.
