Mars, not Venus, is on a shopping spree
The Associated Press is reporting a retailing trend that I find a bit surprising: Men appear to be shopping more than ladies these days.
Some of the latest market research shows sales for menswear on the rise, while women's wear sales have dipped. The upward trend isn't enough to boost overall clothing sales given that menswear accounts for just half the size of all those lady items, but still...our menfolk have been hitting the malls and opening their wallets for something other than the latest iPod touch!
So what are they splurging on? The AP says the "Mad Men"-inspired, slimmed-down silhouette have gotten guys' attention. They are saying goodbye cargo pant, hello lean slacks and suits. Even Dockers, king of the classic and relaxed fit khaki, has introduced slim and straight-fitting styles.
Meantime, women are either uninspired by the new trends or overwhelmed by too many. Sometimes, the little black dress is just easier than a safari print.
I'm all about men looking sophisticated rather than sloppy, but I wonder: Does the slim pant have staying power? Is it a little too metro for the average dude, and will it work for a guy with a beer belly?
