I made my husband bust out laughing the other morning when I came out of the closet with a seafoam dress and seafoam platform wedges and said: "They match. But are they too matchy?" 

He thought it was the most ridiculous concept since "jumbo shrimp." Whatevs. We all know there's a fine line between matching and over-matching.

I don't do top and skirts in the same print. But matching shoes and a purse? Building your choice of earrings around the gold buckle on your shoes?

You can get mileage by breaking the rules. Or nasty snickers.

Monochromatic can work, but I decided not in a hue as overwhelming as seafoam. I paired my dress with bronze flat sandals. (But I did go with earrings that had shades of aqua and blue.)

I love pairing colors in fun combos. Who doesn't love a red or yellow pop against dark colors? Playing with textures is just as easy. A silk top against white or black denim says something totally different than that tried and true silk top and pencil skirt.

Mixing and matching plaids, prints and paisleys... that gets harder. Sometimes, the difference between right and wrong can come down what you're brave enough to wear out the door. Or being smart enough NOT TO GO OUT IN PUBLIC, like the case of the New York socialite in the photo above.
