Mother knows best. Or, when it comes to fashion, does she?

When I was in middle school, I was 13 going on 40. I rummaged through my mother's closet, looking for clothes to borrow. I accessorized with her earrings. I helped myself to her colorful collection of Sam & Libby ballet flats.

A few years later, I didn't want to be caught dead in her clothes. And my feet grew too big for her shoes.

No matter what stage I was in, though, I couldn't help but internalize my mom's shopping do's and don'ts. I mean, as the mother of four girls, she had some credibility in that department. To this day, I still opt for quality over quantity, I (try to) wait for things to go on sale and I believe that leather shoes are worth investing in.

Real Simple put some of these motherly adages to the test with fashion and design experts. Some -- "Never buy something on sale you wouldn't buy at full price" -- still hold up. Others -- "Always wear shoes that are close in color to your pants, especially if you have big feet" -- not so much. It's a cute feature and worth forwarding on to your mom for a Mother's Day chuckle.
