My Outfit Monday: A sparkling New Year
Happy New Year!
Hope yours was great. Mine was. It was even better when I heard someone say, at a New Year's Eve party, "Wow. I could see you from way over there."
Mission accomplished.
I'm normally pretty low key on New Year's Eve. For most of my life, I spent it with the fam. But we're all grown up now and in different parts off the country. And besides, something about this year just seemed a little extra special. Everyone just seemed a little more ... optimistic than last year.
I wanted something fun and sparkly, but still didn't have anything by noon on Saturday.
So I went on a hunt. In my head, I set a budget of no more than $25. I decided to hit up all my favorite local retail, thrift and consignment shops, but stuck a $25 off $50 coupon from Express in my purse just in case.
After about an hour of searching, I actually thought I might have to go up to the mall when I remembered ARTpool in St. Pete is open on Sundays.
I hadn't yet been to the store's new location (on Central Avenue across from Haslam's Book Store) and wanted to check it out anyway.
I should have known better.
Right when I walked in, I saw it: a whole rack of what I can only describe as New Year's gear. A WHOLE RACK. Party dresses, glittery tops, sequins, poofy skirts, and on and on and on.
Then I saw this vintage, cobalt blue, sparkly sequin top. It spoke to me.
And, it was only $24.
The rest of the outfit came together pretty easily. I already had the black jeans ($15 from Forever 21) and white pumps ($29.50 from Macy's) in my closet. The glowstick was free.

Katie Sanders foolishly spurned pretty dresses and shoes as a child, tossing new clothes over her shoulder at birthday parties with a totally rude "no, thank you." Her drab days of monocolor outfits are over now, and she certainly knows better than to turn down free stuff. Her wardrobe mixes classic with quirk. Kameel Stanley has never encountered a thrift store she didn’t like. Her mother taught her that the true value of clothes isn’t how much they cost, but how many outfits one can create from them. Having grown up in Michigan, she was delighted to learn upon moving to Florida that she almost never needed to wear socks or boots again. There’s a lot of turnover in her closet, and she’s obsessed with dresses, necklaces and wedge heels. She can be reached at (727) 893-8643 or
