Olympic figure skater Johnny Weir comes to St. Petersburg Macy's, talks fashion
Occasionally, like almost every day, my job is pretty cool.
Last week, especially. I got to interview Olympic ice skater Johnny Weir, he of outrageous Spandex jumpsuits and makeup and quotes that make staid skating announcers loosen their ties.
He's also a huge fashion buff, and he's in our town to talk about that very thing for Pride week. You can meet Johnny and RuPaul's Drag Race star Alexis Mateo at 6 p.m. Friday at Macy's at Tyrone Square Mall. Georgie's Alibi will provide snacks and champagne. With any purchase of $50 or more from Papi Underwear, you'll receive a free matching T-shirt or hat, and with any purchase of $75 or more during the event, you'll get to meet Weir and receive an autographed copy of Welcome to My World, his new book.
You can read the whole interview here, in which he discusses his decision to come out as gay in his book. But I wanted to give you some of his more fashionable excerpts first. Dude doesn't hold back, that's for sure.
On summer style: "I hate shorts in general because I have big ice skater thighs and a
big booty, but it has been so hot. I love tank tops. I love really flowy long cardigans. I love Japanese street fashion. Anything Japanese or very preppy with the plaid shorts."
On skating looks: "People forget that skating costumes are just that, costumes. It’s not something I’d walk down the street in. I love the fact that I have that other personality, like Beyoncé had Sasha Fierce."
On inspirations: "Lady Gaga, Elton John, Karl Lagerfeld. The staples."
On his favorite color: "I really like gold. I would love a gold medal. I think gold is beautiful. It stands for power, it stands for wealth, it stands for longevity."

Katie Sanders foolishly spurned pretty dresses and shoes as a child, tossing new clothes over her shoulder at birthday parties with a totally rude "no, thank you." Her drab days of monocolor outfits are over now, and she certainly knows better than to turn down free stuff. Her wardrobe mixes classic with quirk. Think blazers with statement necklaces, and lots of patterned ballet flats. She can be reached at 850) 224-7263 or
Kameel Stanley has never encountered a thrift store she didn’t like. Her mother taught her that the true value of clothes isn’t how much they cost, but how many outfits one can create from them. Having grown up in Michigan, she was delighted to learn upon moving to Florida that she almost never needed to wear socks or boots again. There’s a lot of turnover in her closet, and she’s obsessed with dresses, necklaces and wedge heels. She can be reached at (727) 893-8643 or
A disciple of the little black dress classics school, Letitia Stein stretches her budget by looking for styles with staying power. She lives for 80 percent off shoes at DSW, floral sundresses and bohemian chic tops. She confesses to being a bit of a snob when it comes to handbags and jewelry.
