Plaid fever

Plaid is hot right now. (Clinton Kelly said so.)

But I don't think it's the easiest trend to pull off. Go too short with a skirt, and you risk looking like a Catholic schoolgirl a la the "Oops!...I Did It Again" Britney Spears era. Go too frumpy, and you might as well raid your grandmother's closet. If I decide to spend some of my precious bucks on tartan, I plan to go more subtle than Scotswoman.

Check out some of the possibilities:

BertaskirtSkirt: Antonio Melani's "Berta" skirt ($119 at Dillard's) works in a bunch of trends, with its high waist, belt and pencil design. Pair it with tights and boots (refer to Nicole's post for some excellent tips on that combo), and you've got yourself a kickin' outfit.

Jacket: Get your Jackie-O on with this wool number ($44.99 at Target). The 3/4-sleeves make it a good fit for Florida. You can pair it with jeans for a casual look or slacks to dress it up for work.Plaid

PlaidAccessories: Work your inner Burberry even if you can't afford the real thing. A cute plaid clutch or scarf (the one at the left is just $10.80 at Forever 21) offer less expensive ways to work this trend into your wardrobe. And do plaid scarves really ever go out of style? I think not.
