'Precious' star Gabourey Sidibe shows off fashions for fuller figures
When the movie Precious: Based on the Novel "Push" by Sapphire hit theaters last month, the world was introduced to bigscreen newcomer Gabourey Sidibe. As the 26-year-old acting phenom has been out and about promoting the film, we all also got a rare opportunity to watch a plus-sized starlet strut her stuff at premieres and other high-profile events.
Dressing a full figure is hard enough, and Sidibe has the added pressure of standing side by side on the red carpet with co-stars including Mariah Carey and the always-gorgeous Paula Patton.
Let's review some of Sidibe's recent fashion hits and misses.
Nov. 17 at MoMA's second annual Film Benefit in New York City. The purple is great against Sidibe's skin, and the shimmery fabric adds interest without adding bulk. But the cap sleeves don't do her arms any favors.
Nov. 9 at Glamour Magazine's 2009 Women of the Year Honors in New York City. Now we're talkin'. Navy blue was a great choice; the dark shade is flattering but less boring and safe than black. Also, the V neckline draws attention to Sidibe's face, while the 3/4-length sleeves and knee-length hem create coverage without looking dowdy.
Nov. 1 at the AFI FEST 2009 screening of Precious in Hollywood, Calif. The red oozes confidence, which I love. The neckline and high waist work, too. But the sleeves are a bit too "Happy 50th anniversary, Grandma and Grandpa!" for me.
Oct. 23 during the premiere of Precious at the BFI 53rd London Film Festival in England. Love the silver business around the neck and the ruching at the bustline. They both draw the eye up. But the heels could be much higher. This is an international film premiere, not a barbecue at Ben T. Davis Beach.
Divas, which look is your fave? And if you were Sidibe's stylist, what tips would you give her?

Think blazers with statement necklaces, and lots of patterned ballet flats. She can be reached at 850) 224-7263 or
Kameel Stanley has never encountered a thrift store she didn’t like. Her mother taught her that the true value of clothes isn’t how much they cost, but how many outfits one can create from them. Having grown up in Michigan, she was delighted to learn upon moving to Florida that she almost never needed to wear socks or boots again. There’s a lot of turnover in her closet, and she’s obsessed with dresses, necklaces and wedge heels. She can be reached at (727) 893-8643 or
A disciple of the little black dress classics school, Letitia Stein stretches her budget by looking for styles with staying power. She lives for 80 percent off shoes at DSW, floral sundresses and bohemian chic tops. She confesses to being a bit of a snob when it comes to handbags and jewelry.
