The prince and you
This sounds bizarre, but go with me here: An Austrian prince is coming to St. Petersburg to debut his new fashion line. On Thursday, clothing designer and His Highness Mario-Max, Prince Schaumburg-Lippe of Austria (I'm not making this up), will launch his North American fashion line during a soiree at Signature Place. He'll be on hand to show the collection and hobnob with, well, you.
If you’re like me, you have a million questions: A for-real prince? In St. Pete? How did this come about? Am I allowed to hug him?
Here’s the 411: Ivanka Ska, designer extraordinaire and owner of St. Petersburg’s House of Ska boutique, met the prince (she calls him Max) at a red carpet event four years ago in New York City. They kept in touch, and a few months ago Ska started designing ties for Prince Max and his royal posse.* When His Majesty was looking for a place to reveal his North American collection, he remembered his old pal Ska. Thus:
Thursday’s event runs from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. in the Signature Place building at 100 First Ave. S. Admission is $10 at the door, all of which benefits breast cancer research. Start things off on the seventh floor with complimentary hors d’oeuvres from Table restaurant, plus free drinks. There's also live music: DJ Bob Skies, September Penn (wife of St. Petersburg Times reporter Ivan Penn) and Silent Trio.
At 8 p.m., head down to the sixth floor for a fashion show to unveil Prince Max’s collection, aptly named By Appointment to HH. The black and white line features casual T-shirts, boxers, hip-huggers and such for men and ladies. Runway photog Ed Kavishe will shoot the show. After Thursday, the collection will be for sale at House of Ska and online here. For more info on the event (like seriously, what's the Austrian protocol on personal space?), call (727) 822-7752.

Katie Sanders foolishly spurned pretty dresses and shoes as a child, tossing new clothes over her shoulder at birthday parties with a totally rude "no, thank you." Her drab days of monocolor outfits are over now, and she certainly knows better than to turn down free stuff. Her wardrobe mixes classic with quirk. Think blazers with statement necklaces, and lots of patterned ballet flats. She can be reached at 850) 224-7263 or
Kameel Stanley has never encountered a thrift store she didn’t like. Her mother taught her that the true value of clothes isn’t how much they cost, but how many outfits one can create from them. Having grown up in Michigan, she was delighted to learn upon moving to Florida that she almost never needed to wear socks or boots again. There’s a lot of turnover in her closet, and she’s obsessed with dresses, necklaces and wedge heels. She can be reached at (727) 893-8643 or
A disciple of the little black dress classics school, Letitia Stein stretches her budget by looking for styles with staying power. She lives for 80 percent off shoes at DSW, floral sundresses and bohemian chic tops. She confesses to being a bit of a snob when it comes to handbags and jewelry. From camo pants and construction boots to sundresses, sweaters and sling backs, Keyonna Summers knows how to make all of it rock -- at rock bottom prices. A Detroit native, Keyonna delves into her urban roots to find fashion pairings that give a nod to street fashion while maintaining the class of the modern, professional woman. She believes in searching for affordable clothes that look expensive and can easily be dressed up or down. You won't find plaid shirts or fleece jackets in her closet; the only hiking Keyonna does is to the bargain basement. She can be reached at (727) 445-4153 or
