Ralph Lauren: Olympic stud or dud?
The U.S. Olympic team deserved better than what Ralph Lauren gave them to wear for the opening ceremonies in Beijing.
The athletes looked like cruise workers, not world-class competitors. Exactly what about bland pants and heavy jackets says American? Those hats put the "ugly" into an unpleasant national stereotype.
I expected more from Ralph Lauren, the "official outfitter" for the U.S. team and a master of polo-and-pearl timeless appeal. Perhaps the vaunted designer was resting on his laurels, after managing to brand his name onto just about everything from high-end classics to bed sheets and towels at JCPenney.
Cheer for the athletes in the coming weeks. But I won't be making an investment in Ralph Lauren's "Olympic" collection for women. Of course, others may disagree. The website says the men's opening ceremony blazer is sold out.
