The real price of designer jeans?

RIP Like video did the radio star, the recession has killed the high end jean.

RIP premium denim. The New York Times reported this week that under-$200 is the new over-$300. Witness the Rock & Republic "Recession Collection."

Now the Gap is promising the same scrumptious fit for even less. Banana Republic is launching a new line of mid-priced jeans in a few months. No doubt, everyone heard about our Deal Divas poll. More than half of you said you were't willing to pay more than $50 for a good pair of jeans.

For good reason. Buried in the NYT article is a shocking revelation: The true price of premium jeans.

Here's the scoop: "The retail price of most designer jeans is calculated by multiplying the wholesale cost by 2.2. A pair of jeans that costs $158 at Saks, for example, was sold to the store for $72."

Two times-plus markup!!

There's been lots of musing about whether consumers will ever pay full price again, now that the recession has forced retailers to deeply discount merchandise almost as soon as it hits the rack. My answer: No. Not when we find out you've been robbing us blind all these years. Your take?
