Rent the Runway: Look fab, then return it

1

March

Put this in the "Why didn't I think of that?!!?" files.

After the Bag, Borrow or Steal fame, I suppose it was only a matter of time before someone smartened up and expanded the concept. And so it seems some savvy business minds have come together and created the concept of renting fashions - mainly dresses - seen on past season runways.

Rent the Runway is what it's called and I'm quite intrigued.

The idea is you can have your own little bit of high fashion fabulousness for a portion of the price.

For exampled, this glitzy Alice + Olivia dress retails for $500, but you can rent it for $50 at www.renttherunway.com You can keep the dresses from the site for 4 to 8 days, depending on the demand.

First, what I like about RTW: the ease. You can rent a size up or down free of charge. I wear a 6, so I can order that size and the same dress in a size larger or smaller just to be sure I get a proper fit.

What leaves me lukewarm about RTW: the supply. Yes there is Marc Jacobs, Nicole Miller and Harve Leger. What there is not is Gucci, Armani or Chanel. In other words, don't look to RTW if you're walking the Oscars' red carpet. Luckily I am not in need of an Oscar dress. So, oddly the selection is also a plus for RTW, because they have some really lesser-known designers that are cool, like Tracey Reese and Temperly London. I expect as the concept becomes more popular the supply will increase.

What's keeping me from spending my next $50 at RTW: the whole theory. I really do like some of the dresses on the site. But I don't LOVE any of the dresses on the site. So without that burning passion I'm more likely to save my $50 and buy something at the mall. No, it may not be designer, but I also don't have to return it.

For what it's worth, my favorite look on RTW wasn't a dress at all. It was this cute romper by Tibi! Rental price, $50 (retail $388.)
