For savings tips, Mom knows best (Duh)

My mom came to visit last weekend. We spent a whole day shopping. Bliss.

We ate dinner at Nordstrom's Cafe Bistro, the perfect place to refuel when you aren't quite ready to leave the mall. We reminisced about past shopping moments, like the time Mom brought home 10 dresses for me to try on for a Christmas recital and then had to return the nine rejects. (We were desperate and short on time.) Or the time I bought three sweaters for myself and my sisters using her credit card and didn't notice that the store actually charged me for four. (Mom worked it out. She always does.) And the many, many times that my sisters and I sulked in a dressing room because the clothes just weren't working out, and Mom reminded us that things always looked better when you smiled.

During this particular shopping trip, I was looking for a new outfit to wear to Fashion Week Tampa Bay. (Pressure!) And once again, Mom passed on some valuable savings tips that are worth sharing with the masses:

1. I had two coupons for Ann Taylor Loft. One called for 20 percent off a full-priced item. The other allowed for $25 off anything over $50. Mom suggested that I purchase the two items in separate transactions in order to be able to use both coupons. GENIUS!

2. I wanted new black heels but left the stores empty-handed. No worries, Mom said. Just polish the heels you already have. You know, with that shoe polish kit I gave your husband for Christmas and neither of you have used yet. Um, yeah, good idea. She saved me lots of money, and the shoes look almost new.

Thanks, Mom! Come back soon!
