Say yes to headbands for hot 'dos on hotter days
Nothing says summer like breaking out your inner Gidget with a headband.
Let's face it. The Sunshine State's humidity spells disaster for most 'dos. Add a little saltwater and beach breeze, and your hair quickly looks more bee's nest then beach bunny.
So we owe a big "thank you" to the fashion gurus who decided that headbands still work this season. And there are so many styles out there that you shouldn't have any problem finding appropriate looks for the beach or the boardroom (or, ahem, cubicle).
Here are a few options that promise to rid your head of fly-aways, but might also bring a few aches behind the ears by day's end. Take an aspirin, and chalk it up as the price of beauty:
Scarf headbands scream sophistication. Pair one with big Jackie-O sunglasses and a bathing suit for the beach, or a cute sundress for that picnic you've been meaning to plan. At left is a polyester version available at Target for $7.99, or check out the pricier silk versions at JCrew.
The super skinny headband is a safe bet for work. A simple tortoise shell band goes with just about anything. But if that seems too school-girl for your taste, go safari with this funky $12 zebra fabric print band from Ann Taylor.
If you want the look but not the print, go for a double or triple-row headband. They come in just about every color, such as this faux-wood band selling at Claire's for $5.50 (no one has to know you got it there) or another fabric-covered option at Ann Taylor.

Think blazers with statement necklaces, and lots of patterned ballet flats. She can be reached at 850) 224-7263 or
Kameel Stanley has never encountered a thrift store she didn’t like. Her mother taught her that the true value of clothes isn’t how much they cost, but how many outfits one can create from them. Having grown up in Michigan, she was delighted to learn upon moving to Florida that she almost never needed to wear socks or boots again. There’s a lot of turnover in her closet, and she’s obsessed with dresses, necklaces and wedge heels. She can be reached at (727) 893-8643 or
A disciple of the little black dress classics school, Letitia Stein stretches her budget by looking for styles with staying power. She lives for 80 percent off shoes at DSW, floral sundresses and bohemian chic tops. She confesses to being a bit of a snob when it comes to handbags and jewelry.
