Sephora's LashStash: Our biggest mascara review ever
We're always getting questions from readers about mascara recomendations. So when our colleague Sabrina Rocco got a big, honking mascara haul for Christmas, we had her help us out with a review. Here is Sabrina with some lashtastic guest blog action! Take notes, everyone.
Over the years, my best friend Jordan and I reached an understanding. For Christmas, instead of giving each other clothes we might not like, or Ryan Gosling movies, we would thoughtfully explore the depths of Sephora and buy each other a new makeup product.
This year, she blew me away with Sephora’s LashStash, a treasure trove of 10, yes 10, different brand-name mascaras plus a tube of mascara primer and a sexy set of falsies. I was floored. Would I ever buy mascara again? What would I use first? Which would become my new fave?
Here, I review all 10 products. While some are busts, there are more than a few gems tucked in here.
The best part: no clumping. The very fine-tooth brush separated all my lashes to create extra volume, but I was disappointed in the lack of length. I had to apply at least three heavy coats -- and really pull at my lashes at the root with the brush -- to get them as long as I like. Also, the formula seemed a little dry and crusty. Ew.
LOVE. In just one coat, my lashes felt like long, silky paintbrushes. After that, I couldn’t stop -- I had to apply another two for more volume. I wore this while doing errands for six hours and found that it didn't run or flake down my cheeks. Results:
My thought at first coat: "Ehhhhhh, not great." This is just average -- lengthens a bit, adds a little volume -- but it's not anything fantastic. Also, it got clumpy at the roots of my lashes, which may be because the formula came out gummy on the brush. If you're just looking for something to throw on before you go to the grocery store, this does the trick. But at that price, I'd just buy a $5 drug store tube.
After I slathered on a few coats of this, I was impressed by how big my eyes looked. I felt like a Disney princess with gorgeous, giant peepers. This mascara really plays up length instead of volume, but leaves clumping behind. I was also able to successfully use the brush to reach my teeny tiny lashes without smearing it everywhere. Benefit sells a $10 mini tube of this mascara, so you can try it before you commit to buying the full-sized product. Not bad!
For some reason, every time I think of Lancome, I think of grandmas. But this... this was love at first coat. Despite the mild clumping, this mascara might be my favorite and it's perfect for a big night out. If you don't want to risk your fake lash falling off mid-shimmy at the Blue Martini, this is the closest you’ll get to falsies without the risk. My lashes were long, curly, thick. It's just wonderful. GO BUY IT.
Don't let the price fool you. I put this on before I went to the USF-Syracuse hoops game and by the time I left the last bar, my mascara was pooling around the outer corners of my eyes, like I had been sobbing. The formula is thick, gooey and hard to work with. I'd rather pay a few dollars more and pick up a tube of the Stila Stay All Day mascara.
On one eye, I paired this with Tarte's MultiplEYE Natural Lash Enhancing Primer ($22) and was very impressed. My lashes looked visibly longer, but lacked volume. On the other eye, I used the mascara alone and got similar results. Save your money on the primer and buy an extra tube of the mascara. My lashes still felt soft despite the amount of product layered on, and it didn’t clump. I normally don't buy eye makeup at Clinique because their stuff doesn't stay on and it's not dramatic enough for me, but I was really happy with this product.
I tend to layer up on my mascara because I like my lashes thicker, but when I put this on, I didn't have to use 10 coats. In just one coat, my lashes swelled to perfection. While this mascara is stubborn to remove, it's great for all-day wear. I wore it on the treadmill -- not a smudge to be seen.
If I had the extra cash to buy five tubes of this stuff all at once, I WOULD. My lashes looked natural, which means it's perfect for everyday use. I got stuck in the rain wearing this and immediately ran to the bathroom to see if my eyes looked like two Goodyear tires, but the mascara barely budged. It was a nightmare to remove at the end of the day, but well worth it. It doesn’t dazzle at first coat, but if you spend a few extra minutes with it in the morning, you’ll definitely be happy.
I typically don't use an eyelash curler, but I dusted mine off for this mascara, which made my lashes extra wispy. Even more impressive is how they felt so soft despite all the product on them. I'm wearing this today and, I have to say, I feel like some tootsie in a Cover Girl ad.
