The sheer maxi dress for less -- if you want to go there
By now you get it: We totes love maxis.
Now how do we feel about their see-through, crotchety cousins?

KStew and Charlizon are clearly fans.
I'm not convinced. It's not that I hate these gowns. I actually think these work for the occasion, which is a celebration of cinematic terror and sorcery.
But more often than not, deevs, the semi-sheer dresses of today come out looking very '80s. Indeed, like that time Robbie Hart took Julia Sullivan shopping for her wedding dress in Ridgefield, N.J., and her friend, mom and Robbie's effiminate bandmate modeled gowns in a fun sequence set to Hall and Oates' "You Make My Dreams."

You remember "The Wedding Singer."
Maybe it's me. Maybe I just don't see the joys of extra flowy fabric like Julia's BFF here. You may feel differently, and I'd love to know why.
Let's look around.

For $154, you could own this sheer bikini topper by Betsey Johnson. I wouldn't hate it with clothes. Maybe. No, likely not even then. Sorry, I'm shy.

Forever 21 offers this $22 option, which conveniently also hits on Hollywood's knack for showing off one dangerously bare leg. Get this and double your risk of LiLoing.

There's also this in-your-face teal number from Forever. I got stuck on their website because they are huge fans of sheer drapery.

Forever also has a knack for looping in all of the trends in one look. Here we have button-down meets semi-sheer outer layer meets the high-low hemline. Ambitious!
The question remains: Can a normal, tasteful person pull off a sheer maxi? Show me links, wise ones. I'll just be sitting here, working, boring fabric all over me.

Kameel Stanley has never encountered a thrift store she didn’t like. Her mother taught her that the true value of clothes isn’t how much they cost, but how many outfits one can create from them. Having grown up in Michigan, she was delighted to learn upon moving to Florida that she almost never needed to wear socks or boots again. There’s a lot of turnover in her closet, and she’s obsessed with dresses, necklaces and wedge heels. She can be reached at (727) 893-8643 or
