Shirtdress makes getting dressed easy
The best piece I added to my closet this summer? A shirtdress.
I scored a black, tie-wasted beauty at the Banana Republic outlet in Ellenton for about $80. Lightweight cotton with buttons down the front, it has provided a super comfy, easy outfit for work. I just throw on a pair of heels or peep-toe flats and go. It's a look that can be dressed up with flashier heels for night or dressed down for the weekend with a pair of metallic gladiators. And the dress' neutral palette leaves plenty of options for accessorizing.
If you, too, feel inspired by this feminine take on a man's work shirt, here are some options (all available at Dillard's) to consider:
This ABS by Allen Schwartz belted shirtdress is out of my price range at $265 but I love the look...and the idea of the indigo stretch denim. It's dark enough denim to be suitable for work, but the white pickstiching detail and wide, removable belt make it a trendy option for weekend events.
Here's another stretch cotton option, this time a Tahari by ASL in khaki. (Again, love the forgiving fabrics!) It has cuffed elbow sleeves with tab detail and a removable belt. Get it for $138. I like how it's been paired with a chunky bracelet. And just think of the shoe and bag possibilities!
Here's the girliest of the bunch, a Max and Cleo number for $100. Cute cap sleeves, open collar and a black border hem that offers nice balance with the belt. This one also would make a nice transition into fall, a functionality that wins a deal diva's heart.

Katie Sanders foolishly spurned pretty dresses and shoes as a child, tossing new clothes over her shoulder at birthday parties with a totally rude "no, thank you." Her drab days of monocolor outfits are over now, and she certainly knows better than to turn down free stuff. Her wardrobe mixes classic with quirk. Kameel Stanley has never encountered a thrift store she didn’t like. Her mother taught her that the true value of clothes isn’t how much they cost, but how many outfits one can create from them. Having grown up in Michigan, she was delighted to learn upon moving to Florida that she almost never needed to wear socks or boots again. There’s a lot of turnover in her closet, and she’s obsessed with dresses, necklaces and wedge heels. She can be reached at (727) 893-8643 or
