Simon Doonan's Target Halloween costumes are terrifying
I'm in the thick of trying to brainstorm a Halloween costume. It's my favorite holiday, and as the weeks tick by, I'm feeling intense pressure to come up with something brilliant. I thought I might be Snooki (I'm the right height), but then I realized everyone and their sister is going to be Snooki this year. I feel so lost, so confused, so depleted of hair bump...
Anyway, I wandered through Target's Halloween section looking for inspiration. I think the fun of Halloween is assembling a get up from the ground up, so I would never buy a costume in a bag. But I still wanted ideas.
That's when I saw a chintzy red dress marked "A-List Celebrity." I almost choked. Sure. Yeah. Angelina Jolie would DEFINITELY wear this glittered piece of crazy. IN AN ALTERNATE UNIVERSE. Just as I was about to snap a photo of it to tweet for all the world to see, I caught the name on the package. Simon Doonan! He's the creative director at Barney's New York, and a bonafide fashion dude! He knows actual A-List celebrities! WHAT?
His collection for Target is called Costume Couture by Simon Doonan. It includes such gems as "Diva Witch" and "Pumpkin Punk Rocker." As you can imagine, these are not high-end fashion garments. They're prefab Halloween costumes. They look, uh... kinda cheap.
It's great that Target is so committed to working with the fashion world to democratize designer togs for the masses. But I have to think people interested in fashion will be hitting up their local thrift store for a seasonal treasure hunt, not grabbing a polyester shirt that says "Evil Paparazzi."

Her drab days of monocolor outfits are over now, and she certainly knows better than to turn down free stuff. Her wardrobe mixes classic with quirk. Think blazers with statement necklaces, and lots of patterned ballet flats. She can be reached at 850) 224-7263 or
Kameel Stanley has never encountered a thrift store she didn’t like. Her mother taught her that the true value of clothes isn’t how much they cost, but how many outfits one can create from them. Having grown up in Michigan, she was delighted to learn upon moving to Florida that she almost never needed to wear socks or boots again. There’s a lot of turnover in her closet, and she’s obsessed with dresses, necklaces and wedge heels. She can be reached at (727) 893-8643 or
A disciple of the little black dress classics school, Letitia Stein stretches her budget by looking for styles with staying power. She lives for 80 percent off shoes at DSW, floral sundresses and bohemian chic tops. She confesses to being a bit of a snob when it comes to handbags and jewelry.
