T-shirt love goes local

iconstore.jpegMy search for the perfect layering T is over. And it found a solution close to home.

Meet Vana Shipton, a 44-year-old St. Petersburg graphic designer. From her Crescent Lake home, she runs ICON, an online retailer selling what it claims are the best t-shirts in the whole wide web.

Big talk. How do the tees stand up?

I've been testing out one of her long-sleeved tees, the "Fairy Godmother." This mint-hued shirt features a sweet logo reminiscent of an illustration from a vintage children's book. But its curve-hugging fit is anything but old-fashioned.

The cotton held up nicely to the initial wash and dry cycles. The shirt has quickly become a go-to weekend staple. I'd never have guessed that Vana stumbled into the t-shirt business by accident, as she later told me, exploring work-from-home options as a mother of two.

Her prices, while not steep, also aren't bargain basement at $25 to $35 per shirt. But you're buying quality, and supporting a local biz.

My only cautionary advise: I'm a medium-to-small kinda gal, and I'll be too big for my ICON tee if I eat too many holiday treats. Vana says that sizes can vary by design. She tries to post descriptions up on her website to let you know what's running large or small.

The ICON Store sells shirts for men, women, kiddos and babes. And now you can now check out some of her designs at the Paper Street Market on Central Ave. in St. Pete.
