Taking stock of jewelry box essentials

Stone necklace Some days, I feel inspired to try something new with accessories. I throw on a colorful shoe to punch up a monotone outfit. I experiment with a headband or a funky piece of jewelry. I mix metals.

Other days, I just want the accessory equivalent of the LBD. Something safe. Something that looks good but doesn't require creative effort.

To avoid effort whilst getting dressed, however, one must exert effort in advance to ensure that she has the proper pieces from which to choose. (Repeat that sentence out loud in your best Miss Manners voice.)

So what are the jewelry box must-haves? The stunningly beautiful Ivanka Trump told that every woman should own a couple pairs of earrings and a bead necklace, all in black, white or clear. That way, she says, they can be worn all the time.

My go-to pieces are different -- and don't include these $550 diamond and black onyx earrings from Ivanka's collection. (Sorry I.T.! I love you! Call me girlfriend!) But my strategy is the same. I invested in faux diamond earrings, a long silver necklace, a long gold necklace and fun silver and gold earrings, all accessories with lots of wearability.

What are your must-have, go-to, can't-live-without pieces? What is your jewelry box missing?
