TOMS: The feel-good shoe of the summer

tomsflats.jpgWhile swinging through Nordstrom last week, I was intrigued by TOMS, those flat, earthy looking canvas shoes that are suddenly popping up everywhere. They scream "ECO-FRIENDLY!", which is not necessarily a prerequisite for my fashion choices, but some of the new styles were pretty cute. There was a glittery silver pair, a red-and-white nautical stripe pair, some bright yellow ones .... and oooooh, WEDGES!

I'm not a huge fan of flats, which tend to hurt my arches and make me feel like a duck, but I did try on the classic TOMS style, which is a comfy slip-on that comes in tons of colors and has neat patterns on the inside of the shoe. But I couldn't do it. It looked like my feet were all ace-bandaged up. I felt like a mummy. toms.jpg

But the wedges: Yes! They were over three inches high, yet felt cushiony and comfy, and were a nice, casual alternative to the pleather wedge sandals I usually wear in the summer. I got them in the ever-practical black.

They're also $69, which is a tad pricey to be talking about on a blog that has the word "Deal" in it. However ... the whole appeal of TOMS is that for every pair of shoes you buy, TOMS gives a new pair of shoes to a child in need. The company claims it has donated over a million pairs of shoes to kids in countries like Argentina and Ethiopia, where soil-transmitted diseases are common, as well as here in the United States. So you're essentially buying two pairs of shoes.

Here's what they look like on my feet. Note the OPI Shatter nail polish on my toes, which we raved about last week.
