Tyrone Square Mall turning 40, bringing in DSW
St. Petersburg's Tyrone Square Mall is turning 40 this year and inviting shoppers to celebrate like its opening day.
Times retail reporter Susan Thurston has the scoop: The mall at 66th Street N and 22nd Avenue N is throwing a throwback party from 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday, complete with a '70s cover band (Brick House, anyone?), dancers and a fashion show. The first 250 guests get swag bags.
We imagine the scene might look a lot like this 1977 St. Petersburg Times photo (these dancers in their bell-bottomed jeans were raising money for the Muscular Dystrophy Association in front of J.C. Penney).
Even if you're not up for dancing, it wouldn't be a bad time to check out the mall's new H&M or -- NEWS ALERT -- DSW, which will open in place of the old Borders store on Thursday.
And what do you know? DSW just sent me a birthday coupon. Perfect timing.
Look, International Plaza, you're super glitzy and all, but ol' Tyrone keeps giving this St. Pete girl reasons to stay close to home for shopping.
