As Letitia told you this morning, there was a psychotic run on the Missoni for Target line that debuted this morning. When our reporter called a Tampa store to ask what was left, the Target employee just laughed. On the web today, we've read tales of people stuffing Missoni items into carts by the dozen. And instead of offering links to the collection, Target.com offered a picture of a puppy with a toolbox and the message: woof! We are suddenly extremely popular. You may not be able to access our site momentarily due to unusually high traffic. Please stay here and we'll try to get you in as soon as we can! Please know that there is no need to refresh your browser. Your request will automatically retry in 30 seconds. This was all day. What are the maniacs possibly DOING with it all? Who needs that many pairs of ballet flats, that many decorative throw pillows derivative of the 1960s? Surely some well-meant woman is not outfitting her entire family in horizontal zig-zag motifs. Where did it all GO? We'll tell you where. It's on eBay. A quick search for "Missoni for Target" on eBay yielded 153 pages of results, all with inflated prices. Those ballet flats some of you were hoping to score? They're available in "ALL SIZES!!" for the low prices of $75. That two-piece Missoni luggage set? It can be yours for $525. You can buy a bulk lot of seven pieces for $500. Strategic hoarding is nothing new in certain fashion circles. So-called "sneakerheads" will buy up the latest models of Nike Dunks, then turn around and sell them online. "A lot of sneakerheads, they'll sit on them and then they'll resell them on eBay and make a killing," Bob Levoy, manager of Westside Skateshop in Tarpon Springs told the St. Petersburg Times this year. But have we ever seen this kind of thing with a line of affordable women's clothing at a discount store? In an unscientific study, we searched a few other popular Target designer lines on eBay. "Thakoon for Target" yielded one page. "Zac Posen for Target" yielded three. "Jean Paul Gaultier for Target" got us one. We checked "Missoni for Target" again ten minutes later, just for the heck of it. It was up to 158 pages of results.
