The vest: Fug or fab?

Vests are back in full force this fall. They are popping up in stores, and the October issue of InStyle says they are one of the key pieces you'll wear now and forever.

I'm not convinced.

Don't get me wrong, I see potential. A herringbone vest would allow us Sunshine Staters to bring fall into our wardrobes without all the heaviness of a jacket.Gap

I like this look from Gap (right). It offers a feminine fit on a masculine style, and though I'm not really psyched about it, masculine also is "in" right now. This particular take on the trend still feels girlie to me with the model wearing a close-fitting turtleneck underneath. Gap suggests a tank or feminine woven shirt also would look nice. I think this sleeveless Vaness Bruno bolero/shawl number (left) looks kinda cool too.

VanessabrunoBut I'm also seeing a whole lot of ugly out there. Vests that seem too '80s, too boxy, too maitre d'. I fear there are a lot of ways to go wrong with them, and I don't want to fall in that trap.

Whaddya think? Button up or butt out of this trend?
