Your spring forecast: Deals, deals, deals!
You know what's the best thing about this warm weather? Besides, of course, opening your windows and getting to wear shorts and finally changing out of the only warm sweater you own... It's the SPRING CLEANING!
By which I mean, THE GARAGE SALES!
Ohhhh yes, folks. Start checking your newspapers and scouring your neighborhood. Any day now, you'll see the telltale permanent marker-penned sign, the embarrassing Star Wars posters, the toaster oven from 1984, the wonderfully well-used tricycle and $1 box o' books. Breathe deep and take it all in.
I was lucky enough to stumble upon one such paradise of penny-pinching the other weekend, while helping clean out my grandma's place in Clearwater. I didn't plan to spend the day shopping, but because I'd just signed a lease on a new apartment and would need a couple new pieces of furniture when my current roomie moves out, I figured I'd give it a gander.
Boy was I glad I did.
This couch was the first thing I saw. The perfect size, very comfortable and without any hint of a smell, it was meant for me! For guess how much.... $35!!!!! And no, I'm not kidding.
As I mentally placed a crisp, clean slipcover on the darling, I heard one of the sale organizers announce that it was time to "SLASH THE PRICES IN HALF!" What? Are you serious?
So yes, ladies and gentlemen. This baby came home with me for the low, low price of $17.50. Less than a tank of gas!
But it didn't stop there.
Next I moved onto the dishware. Navigating around the WORLD'S BEST DAD mugs and elf-shaped cookie cutters, I found a complete 6-piece set of ceramic dinner plates, dessert plates and bowls for.. wait for it... $5!!!
Don't you love the sweet speckled pattern?
Now it's up to you, divas. Don those shorts, whip out those flip flops and go score some deals! (Remember, bring cash, and be ready to haggle!) Good luck to you!

Her drab days of monocolor outfits are over now, and she certainly knows better than to turn down free stuff. Her wardrobe mixes classic with quirk. Think blazers with statement necklaces, and lots of patterned ballet flats. She can be reached at 850) 224-7263 or
Kameel Stanley has never encountered a thrift store she didn’t like. Her mother taught her that the true value of clothes isn’t how much they cost, but how many outfits one can create from them. Having grown up in Michigan, she was delighted to learn upon moving to Florida that she almost never needed to wear socks or boots again. There’s a lot of turnover in her closet, and she’s obsessed with dresses, necklaces and wedge heels. She can be reached at (727) 893-8643 or
A disciple of the little black dress classics school, Letitia Stein stretches her budget by looking for styles with staying power. She lives for 80 percent off shoes at DSW, floral sundresses and bohemian chic tops. She confesses to being a bit of a snob when it comes to handbags and jewelry.
