Friday Fun: Roller Derby Fashion
Today's post is a bit out of the ordinary. But, hey, it's Friday, so we're allowed to have some fun, right?
This weekend I am playing in my first roller derby bout (eek!), so I thought I would commemorate it here by taking a look at the fashion I've found in roller derby.
Roller derby can be pretty colorful.
First, there's the equipment.
I have cotton candy pink skates. Of course. But mine pale in comparison to some of the other options out there. From flames and stripes to geometric patterns, the sky is the limit. Add in toe stops, shoelaces and wheels of varying hues and it just keeps getting better.
Even knee pads, elbow pads, wrist guards and mouthguards are customizable.
Then, there's the uniforms.
I play for the Rockabilly Rebels whose colors are red and cheetah print. Cheetah print is a color, right?
But when roller derby fashion gets really crazy is at practice or open scrimmages.
I've seen my teammates wearing everything from tights with burgers and french fries on them to metallic hot pants. I spotted a pair of Aladin tights in Hot Topic a few weeks ago that I might just have to go back for.
Check out the slideshow above for a few photos I snapped at a recent practice and a couple of items I'm lusting after. And, shameless plug, if you want to see the fashion for yourself, head to Lakeland for our bout Sunday.
