Get excited for these designer frocks we CAN afford
September is an important month for fashion geeks like us.
Fashion Week! Awards shows! September issues! Plus, it’s also when designers debut fall collections. And I’m not just talking about the ones on runways.
At this point, we’re all familiar with the collaborations that happen pretty regularly now with designers and stores we actually shop at. Personally, I love them. It’s fun being able to spice up my wardrobe with pieces from my favorite designers, or some I would never even consider. And since they’re usually seasonal, it adds an element of gotta-get-it-before-it’s-gone, no?
So what are we excited about for this fall? What if I said Phillip Lim -- for Target? (!!!)
Hold the applause. There’s more.
In fact, for the past few days, I’ve been drooling over a Malandrino frock that screams “birthday dress” (did I mention that’s another reason I’m so fond of September?). It’s sheer back, which features the outline of the Eiffel Tower, is a little whimsical and crazy. It could be a bad idea, but you want to try anyway.
The rest of the collection is a lot of blacks and whites, with a certain level of chicness that screams Paris socialite. With good reason. Malandrino, in an introduction on the store’s website, called the collection a “love poem” to the City of Lights.
By contrast, Lim’s Target collection has a distinctly American feel, and fits in with current trends. And I don’t mean that as a bad thing. I’m loving the shape of most his clothes, which seem tailored but still breathable. Plus, they look like they’d be good for work or play (double duty!). Lim said he wanted the collection to be “cool and chic, but still very accessible.”
There are a couple head-scratchers, like camo-print ensembles and the “fancy” sweatpants for both men and women. (No. Just no.)
For some reason, H&M is being stingy and thus far has only released one image thus far of the Marant collection (in a tweet, of course). But we’re guessing the French designer will bring some more of Paris to the masses. At least we hope.
Lim and Malandrino’s collections are expected to hit shelves this month, and Marant’s is expected in November.
