Getting acquainted with Pantone's 2014 Color of the Year

I don't have a favorite color. When I was little I would just sort of pick one for a while to use for all those goofy little kid assignments that made you talk about your favorites. You know, those "All About Me" posters for open house and such. My most recent faux favorite is green. I picked it because I associate it with all those amazing photos of sprawling European landscape and I just really want to hang out with a furry cow in some really, really green field in Scotland, as one does.

But nope, no favorite. Why pick one when there's a whole rainbow of colors appropriate for any given occasion, outfit, wall of your home, etc.? That's why I'm really into the fact that Pantone names a Color of the Year every year. A new, awesome color gets to take the spotlight each year. Last year's was emerald. For 2014, it's all about orchid.

I'm really digging it. I've had a hard time embracing purple shades in the past because it's my sister's favorite color (like, FAVORITE color, with a capital F and a capital every other letter, too), so it's always felt like her thing, in that weird sister way where you can't POSSIBLY both like the same stuff. But this orchid color is really pretty, so I just might make an exception in 2014.

Check out the slideshow for some pretty purple-ish suggestions from Target, Lulu's, Macy's, Payless and J Crew Factory. Are you liking 2014's designated shade? Do you have a favorite that's always creeping its way into your wardrobe?
