Inside the Capitol Style Files
Hi, there! It’s Tia Mitchell here: longtime-reader, first-time guest blogger. I’m a political reporter in the Tampa Bay Times/Miami Herald’s
Someone thought it was a good idea to hand over the reins to the Times’ Instagram account to yours truly last week. I posted pictures every day, trying to give our social media followers a glimpse into what it’s like covering the state Capitol.
But I’m also the kind of girl who stops complete strangers in the hallway to say, “Your dress is adorable!” So I wanted to bring some of that flavor to Instagram, as well.
Every day, I highlighted at least one Fashionista/o of the Day. These were people I selected because I thought they had it going on and could inspire us to step up our business-appropriate wardrobe. Their mixture of high- and low-price points and use of color is what usually caught my eye.
Some of these folks will be familiar to you. For example, I sorta died when Attorney General Pam Bondi walked into the Cabinet meeting wearing “red bottoms” and the cutest suit and jacket combo. I later found out she purchased her outfit from
On Monday, I took a photo of
Tuesday was actually a two-fer, featuring both Bondi and spokeswoman Jenn Meale. Meale’s jacket -- tweed with leather detail -- matched perfectly with her teal blouse, and I also loved her strappy pumps.
Wednesday was my first Fashionisto of the Day: Rep. Shevrin Jones, a Broward County Democrat. His style never disappoints, and I knew even before I saw him that he would be a perfect choice. His attention to detail -- check the shoes -- is outstanding.
Thursday, was the first day I literally stopped a “stranger” to ask her if she wouldn’t mind being featured. The woman's dress was this beautiful paisley print in navy and purple, and she had on the cutest sweater and silver chain necklace to match. Only then did I realize she was a woman I have written about several times, Liz Dudek, the chief of the Agency for Health Care Administration.
By Friday, the meetings were over and most lawmakers had returned home. It was fun to finally turn the camera inward on some of my coworkers. In addition to being the newest addition to the Times/Herald bureau, Kat McGrory is a fashionista in her own right, carrying the “it” bag of the Capitol: a Louis Vuitton Neverfull. At the same time, I soaked in the Friday-casual style of her fiancé (engaged one week), Michael Van Sickler of the Times. Yes, that included a gratuitous picture of the ring!
