Judith Leiber's red carpet worthy bags now at Sundial
You’ve seen Judith Leiber’s sparkling evening bags on red carpets for decades cuddled in the lovely hands of Elizabeth Taylor, Sarah Jessica Parker, Cate Blanchett, Jennifer Aniston and Jennifer Lopez just to name a few. Jacqueline Kennedy was also a fan. Just Monday night, Jennifer Hudson, Elle Fanning and Alessandra Ambrosio carried Judith Leiber handbags to the Met Gala.
They are the Limoge boxes of fashion in the shapes of a starfish, top hat, beehive, Geisha fan (Chrissy Teigen has that one) asparagus bunch, baby pig, telephone, camera and beyond and beyond and beyond.
The bags are a testament to the creativity and tenacity of Leiber, who was born in Hungary in 1921, survived World War II in hiding then moved to New York where she worked her way up in the fashion industry.
Each bag encrusted in Swarovski crystals takes five days to make by hand. They are available mostly at tony department stores such as Saks, Neiman Marcus and Bergdorf Goodman.
But starting Friday, Jackie Z Style Co. in Sundial will carry 50 of the latest miniaudières and handbags from the luxury designer’s spring line.
Sorry to say they are still just as expensive as elsewhere with prices from $1,000 to more than $6,000 a piece. But a girl can still look can’t she?
The boutique’s owner, Jackie Zumba, is inviting us to do just that with a champagne reception from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Friday. Leiber bags have been on exhibit at the Met, MOMA and the Smithsonian so even if you are far from buying, think of it as a trip to an art gallery for amazing gazing.
Leiber met her husband, an American soldier, on the streets of Budapest shortly after it was liberated. They soon married and moved to his native New York where she started in the fashion industry as a handbag pattern maker. She moved up to foreman and in 1963 started her own company. Soon a Judith Leiber bag was a must-have for current and former first ladies, movie stars and socialites.
Attendees of the champagne reception will have a brief presentation by one of Judith Leiber Couture’s top stylists, as well as light bites. Jackie Z Style Co. is located at Sundial, 153 2nd Ave. N in downtown St. Petersburg.
