Look for less: Fall ankle booties
I peered into my friend Jessica's trunk this week, looking at her stash.
Shoes, three fresh pair right off the rack at DSW. One pair of brown strappy heels, one pair of delicious orange wedges and one pair of boots. The boots were short and black, studded with a floppy side tongue. I, of course, approved right away, but I tend to dress like Liberace's lover, so I am not the best judge for someone looking for a more conservative opinion.
Jessica was unsure, but took them home. Turned out, her high-school teacher husband wasn't sure about them either. They were too youthful, too tacky, too student-like. And maybe it was for the best they went back, because what Jessica really wanted, if she really followed her heart, were these.
Black ankle boots from Madewell with a stacked heel (which Kameel informed you all about this week) and inside zipper, priced at $208. Should she splurge? She came to me once again for help, this time, help finding the look for less.
I am not against investing in something you'll wear over and over again, especially if it's as neutral as a black boot. These boots seem to have good reviews, but I'm not sold that she can't do better. This time of year, boots are practically spilling out of our ears, screaming, "Buy us! Wear us! Sweat inside us, because it is Florida!"
I found some options for Jessica from Zappos, Macy's, Sam Edelman, Target and Payless. To aid in the search, I used our trusty friend, Polyvore, which is just about the most handy shopping and sorting tool out there.
What do you think? Should she invest or find a suitable stand-in? Check the slideshow for our options.
