My Outfit Monday: Wardrobe staples with touches of pizzazz

3

March

Happy Oscars Monday, possibly the Mondayest Monday of the year!

We stayed up to watch the whole ceremony, including that adorable and relatable moment when Brad Pitt and Harvey Weinstein threw the equivalent of our life savings into Pharrell's Arby's hat -- for their share of delivery pizza. Now we're back at our desks, the opposite of bright-eyed and wealthy and glamorous.

No surprise here, I feel blergh. To keep things simple this morning, I stuck to the basics. At first I agonized about the lack of adventure, but now I'm thinking it's better we have an honest conversation about closet essentials and how to brighten them (and not, say, to dwell over my dead celly, which contained pictures of cuter outfits I've tried out these last few weeks).

I am obsessed with this hot pink Portofino button-down shirt from Express. Dressy, flowy and oh so easy. If I could, I would own one in each of the 26 available shades, in addition to this kitten and butterfly print (oh, maybe because I already own a kitten print button-down). The sticker price is $50, so wait for a good sale. Right now it's buy one, get one for $29.50, which isn't enough of a deal for me but may work for you.

My black pants are also from Express. I've loved the store's Editor line of dress pants ever since high school, and I don't see myself changing my allegiance anytime soon. My favorite style is the flared leg with wide waistband. Very comfortable, very flattering. I have one in black and one in a charcoal brown.

The pumps are Tahari via DSW that I've worn again and again (remember, today is staples day). I've taken them to the cobbler at least twice to deal with damaged heels. People usually laugh at me when I talk about "my cobbler," but I think it's worthwhile to repair old shoes rather than replace them each time a metal pin pops through the heel tip.

Now for some fun. I am playing host to a little arm party with this four-piece bangle set from LOFT ($5!) and a vintage black and gold watch from "Chanel." The air quotes are necessary because I have no idea if the watch, which needs a new battery at least, is legit. The arm party plays well with my Forever 21 3/4-sleeve blazer, which I take on and off as I please. I'm also wearing this gaudy bejeweled vintage necklace that I go back and forth on (too much? Not enough?). I bought the "designer watch" and necklace at a $1 jewelry sale at the Iron Pelican, an antiques shop on Central Avenue in St. Petersburg, a few months ago.

In other news, I got a noticeable hair cut for the first time in years, as well as my first gel manicure. The pretty pale blue hue lasted all of a week before my, um, tendencies to pick off nail polish kicked in.

Now it's your turn to talk. Where do you get your work wear? Do you pick up essentials as you find them, or are you a bit of a brand loyalist for certain items? Is the jewelry a little too Vegas or a little bit unforgettable? Let's chat.
