Shopping Planner: Cinco de Mayo and Mad Props at Freefall
Keep it Local: Small Business Week
This week is national Small Business Week, so in the spirit of shopping small and local, here are a few suggestions on how to support the little guys.
Grab a passport from one of the shops in downtown St. Petersburg for the Spring Down Central Shop Hop on Sunday. Participating shops Florida CraftArt, ZaZoo’d, Misred Outfitters, Strands of Sunshine, Ashe Couture, Plain Jane and Milagros will offer specials, refreshments and giveaways. Get your passport stamped at all locations and be entered in a raffle to win baskets stuffed with goodies from small businesses all over St. Pete. (727) 827-8310.
Try your hand at candlemaking with a Cinco de Mayo candle workshop in Hyde Park Village on Friday. Local business Seventh Avenue Apothecary makes beautifully scented soy candles, and will guide you in the process of pouring. The event is held at West Elm, and every participant gets a free taco and swag from Bartaco. In-store specials at West Elm and Seventh Avenue Apothecary are also available. $35. (813) 247-3814. tampasoy.com.
There’s no better way to support a wide variety of small businesses than at a market. You’ll find a wide variety of items from food to jewelry from independent vendors in St. Pete at the Saturday Morning Market (100 First St. SE) or the Ybor City Saturday Market (1800 E Eighth Ave.).
Own the Magic: Mad Props at Freefall Theatre
It never ceases to amaze me how props, sets and costumes magically transform an empty stage into another world. If you could use a little magic in your life, check out Freefall Theatre’s Mad Props sale on Saturday. The theater has been spring cleaning, so vintage decor, unique props and scenery will be available for purchase. It runs from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., and keep in mind, the early bird gets the worm. 6099 Central Ave., St. Petersburg. (727) 498-5205.
