Fresh Fiesta: Casa Tina’s Dia de los Muertos Celebration
Casa Tina, the Dunedin Mexican restaurant, is known for its annual Dia de los Muertos celebration in Pioneer Park, perhaps the most elaborate of any in the area. The theme of Saturday’s event is “Leyendas Prehispanicas,” based on the legend of Popocatépetl and Iztaccíhuatl. The celebration includes a Dia de los Muertos fashion show and costume contest. Count on a lot of sugar skull-painted faces, flower crowns and soldadera garb. The fashions and makeup were co-created with Mayra Guerrero, Claudia Bo, Neva Durham, Estragos D Gante, Sati Jaya, Perla Leal Balch and Shawn Ryan. The costume contest has three categories: Local Artist, Fridas (as in Kahlo) and Calaveritas (meaning little skeletons, or your children). There will be an abundance of authentic Mexican folk art for sale, live music, drumming and folkloric dancing. The festivities all culminate in Casa Tina’s Calaca Krewe candlelit procession down Main Street. The event runs from 3 to 10 p.m. Saturday. Suggested donation: $10. casatinas.com.
Free Stuff: Halloween ComicFest
Halloween ComicFest is a day that comic book shops across the nation participate in, and it’s happening Saturday. Locally, Coliseum of Comics in New Tampa and Brandon’s Read More Comics will be celebrating with free comics. Wear your costume to Coliseum of Comics to compete in “the Greatest Halloween Costume Contest Ever” (no pressure). Read More Comics is having a storewide sale, and both shops will offer candy and other treats. Coliseum of Comics (19402 Bruce B. Downs Blvd., Tampa) is open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. (813) 528-8758. The Read More Comics event runs from noon to 8 p.m. at 115 E Brandon Blvd. readmorecomics.com.
One-Year Cheer: Tampa Premium Outlets' Anniversary
It seems unbelievable that Tampa Premium Outlets has already been open for a year. But Saturday the shopping center celebrates the anniversary with a free event hitting the major October marks: Halloween and Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Guests are encouraged to come dressed as their favorite superhero to celebrate hero survivors, as all proceeds from the event, including donations, a raffle and $1 stickers for the Hero Wall, benefit the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. The party runs from 6 to 9 p.m. and includes family activities, entertainment and musical performances by Mad Dogs and Sacred Fire. Stop by guest services in Market Hall to purchase a discount card for $10, which gives you a 25 percent discount at participating retailers. Tampa Premium Outlets is at 2300 Grand Cypress Drive in Lutz. premiumoutlets.com/outlet/tampa/stores.
Splendid Table: Coton Colors Warehouse Sale
Local Tampa business and national lifestyle brand Coton Colors is bringing its annual warehouse sale to Tampa today through Saturday. The sale comes at a perfect time for those who enjoy hosting holiday events at home — you can have a whole new tablescape this year. They’ll have hourly specials, giveaways and something called “happy bombs” — yeah, I don’t know what that is either, so you’ll have to stop by and find out.
