Shopping Planner: Give and get, Dali and International Plaza, Inspire Your Style, Stuff the Bag and Labor Day White Parties

Give and Get: Goodwill and Florida Aquarium
Most likely, you’ve got a bag of stuff lurking around that you’re meaning to donate, but keep forgetting. Maybe this deal will help you remember. During September, when you donate clothes or household items to any Goodwill Industries Suncoast store or attended donation site, you will receive a coupon good for $10 off up to four full-paid general admission tickets to the Florida Aquarium in Tampa. Goodwill shoppers who round up their purchases to the nearest dollar will also get a coupon. The coupons are redeemable at the Florida Aquarium until Nov. 30. For its part, the aquarium will donate $1 for each redeemed ticket to support Goodwill’s employment services. To find a donation site near you, visit

Surreal Incentive: International Plaza and DalÍ
If you’re already planning on hitting the mall, here’s an opportunity that makes sense. When you purchase at least five International Plaza gift cards from the concierge desk, you will receive two free tickets to the “Horst Photographs: Fashion and Surrealism” exhibition at the Dalí Museum in St. Petersburg. The tickets are valued at $48, and the gift cards must have a minimum value of $20 each. Let me flex my math skills here: For $100 you get an experience valued at nearly half that, and you have the gift cards to either give as gifts or use on yourself. Sounds like a great deal to this art lover and shopping enthusiast. You’d better hurry if you want to take advantage of it; the offer and the exhibit end Tuesday.

What to Wear: Inspire Your Style
It’s not every day one gets the chance to consult a professional about one’s style choices, much less for free. Tampa Premium Outlets in Lutz is hooking you up Friday through Sept. 11 with the Inspire Your Style event. Reserve your complimentary styling session and shopping experience with local stylists Valerie Romas and Jackie Walker. The first 80 people to book will receive a $10 Simon Visa Gift Card and a Tampa Premium Outlets Tote, filled with a makeup caddy and retailer goodies. At the event, the stylists will dress a woman in need from the Centre for Women. She’ll receive a wardrobe styling session, hair and makeup from a local artist and gift cards from Tampa Premium Outlets so she can purchase the clothing she finds during the session.

POSTPONED: Stuff the Bag
Local organization CASA (Community Action Stops Abuse) has a thrift shop in St. Petersburg called Collections. They’re having a Sidewalk Sale from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on September 8. The event was orginally planned for today, but was rescheduled due to the weather.  They’ll give you a bag that you can stuff with as many clothes as will fit for only $5. CASA has been providing lifesaving services to women, men and children living with domestic violence since 1977. Sounds like a fun way to see how creative you can get in making things fit in the bag. 1011 First Ave. N.

Items of the Week: Labor Day Whites
Ah, the end of summer draws near, signified by the Labor Day Weekend. Historically, this was the last chance to get away with wearing white before you’ve committed a very serious fashion faux pas. Floridians know that Labor Day doesn’t magically put an end to the sweltering heat, so if we wear white once in a while it’s probably okay. But what a great excuse to have a white party!
White Linen Nights, a two-day event from 5 to 9 p.m. Friday and Saturday on the 600 block of downtown St. Petersburg, was the vision of the owners of the Cider Press Cafe, in the long-standing Southern tradition of wearing white linen to combat the stifling summer heat. Many of the 600 block’s merchants, like Twig, Misred and Cozette’s Boutique are participating with special discounts. There will also be food, drink and live music at other businesses. Visit the Cider Press Cafe’s Facebook page for more information.
Or don your whites at the White Hot Summer Party, held at Marchand’s Bar and Grill in the Vinoy in St. Petersburg on Friday night. DJ Fresh provides the entertainment while you enjoy food, cocktails and a complimentary champagne hour provided by Moet Ice. $75-$90. (727) 824-8072.
