The key to stealing Taylor Swift's style is in the bag
Red lips aren’t Taylor Swift's only classic default when it comes to style.
At the ripe old age of 25, Tay Tay has the taste in handbags of a British royal or a French grand dame. Whenever she hits the sidewalks, she's carrying a solid-colored handbag, signature-patterned tote, satchel-style shoulder bag or whimsical cross body bag all in earth and jewel tones.
When her 1989 World Tour lands in Tampa on Saturday, she is welcome to leave all the purses she's not using behind. Of the dozens that she has been photographed carrying, a few pop up more often than others. These handbags share a certain something so quintessentially Taylor you couldn't imagine any other celebrity carrying them. These are the bags we're sure she's stuffed into her designer luggage for days out on the town and breaks between shows.
Quite a few of these glorious makeup shuttles are unattainable for us mere mortals. They've either sold out, gone out of season, came custom made or are just plain too expensive. But fret not. Swift is a girl from Wyomissing, Pa. Not everything she wears costs a mortgage payment.
Her personal favorite, her every bag if you will, is the Prada Saffiano Lux Tote, which retails for a cool $2,200. It's easy to see why she likes it. The nude color pairs well with most anything and the sophisticated shape makes even a mini dress look a touch classier. If you've got the money, it's an investment bag, for sure. For the rest of us, it's just as nice to find a large fine leather tote in a neutral color with minimal embellishments. Try this similarly shaped but smaller Prada tote instead that come in at under $300.
For your on-the-go Swift look, look to Henri Bendel's Jet Setter Mini Convertible Backpack ($228) to add a slight edge to something feminine, or totally go full-tilt rocker chick with it like she did.
When Swift's going to do business or heading to a TV appearance, she tosses her cell phone and lipstick into her all-purpose J. Mendel Matin Tote ($2,500). For us, the similarly styled Charming Charlie Lady Lock Box satchel ($39) gives off a similar business vibe for a fraction of the price.
And Swift's most utilitarian purse to date was spotted on her shoulder at 2015's Wango Tango concert in Los Angeles, setting off her knit sweater and corduroy shorts combo. The Coach Legacy Leather Amanda Flap Brass bag ($97.90) in cognac unified the look and had enough pockets to make sure nothing was accidentally misplaced.
Emulating Swift's street style starts with the bag. Her purse game has been varsity since the release of Red, when she abandoned her princess get-ups and rushed headlong into blending the classic screen-siren face with a 21st century take on the ingenue.
She never shoots for wow with her bags. Her strip of belly skin does that. Swift's bag collection transitions well from day to night, from office to party, from work-a-day to vacation. Starting your transition to T. Swift style starts with finding your perfect shade of red lip and stocking your closet with beautiful bags to all that stuff you probably don't need.
