Two former Gators named to US Olympics soccer team

Former Gator All-Americans Heather Mitts and Abby Wambach were named to the 2008 U.S. Woomen's soccer Olympic team, head coach Pia Sundhage announced Monday afternoon.

The two are part of an 18-player roster and are making their second consecutive appearance in the Olympics. Wambach scored the game-winner in overtime to give the U.S. a 2-1 win over Brazil in the 2004 gold medal match.

Wambach is considered one of the world's top players. She has scored 98 goals, which computes to scoring in 80 percent of her 123 U.S. National Team appearances. She is two goals away from joining the U.S. Women's 100-goal scorers list, which currently includes such luminaries as Mia Hamm, Kristine Lilly, Michelle Akers and Tiffeny Milbrett. Wambach leads the USA in 2008 scoring with 12 goals.
