Gators to face struggling Georgia tonight
After entering and falling out of the Top 25 rankings in just one week, Florida returns home to the O'Connell Center for the first time in 11 days, hosting a Georgia team that is ailing and struggling at this point in the season.
The Bulldogs are winless in conference play, 9-10 overall. Florida enters the game having won 11 of its last 12, while Georgia is on a six-game losing streak. Senior Terrance Woodbury is one of two Bulldogs averaging in double figures, but has been hampered with injured ankles all season.
And freshman Trey Thompkins, the only other double-figure scorer (13.2 ppg) has struggled the past three games, shooting 7-for-32 from the field.
Florida suffered a last-second loss to South Carolina last Wednesday, but bounced back with a double-digit win against Vanderbilt on Sunday. Sophomore Chandler Parsons had a career-high scoring day, and the Gators knocked down 15 3-pointers against the Commodores. Which is all the more reason coach Billy Donovan is a little worried entering this game. He's seen this before from this group.
"Last year we did not handle success,'' Donovan said. "We didn't understand how to handle success. We became complacent. We thought it was a lot easier than it was. We didn't realize how difficult it was.''
So Florida's biggest challenge tonight will be not overlooking Georgia and looking ahead to its Saturday night showdown with arch-rival Tennessee - a prime time game with the ESPN GameDay crew.
But that may be easier said that done when you consider this: since March 2004, Florida has won 10 consecutive games over the Bulldogs. The last nine victories have been by double figures.
