Is Tennessee spending spree disturbing or necessary?

Florida fans who have enjoyed the domination the Gators have held over Tennessee over the past few years, might want to get a little concerned.

Since 2000, Florida is 5-3 against the Vols, and the Gators have won three consecutive. Tennessee has had two losing seasons in the past four years.

In trying to right the ship, the Vols' athletic administration is paying top dollar for its assistant coaches. Since hiring Lane Kiffin to replace longtime coach Phillip Fulmer, Tennessee has spent $3.3 million in salaries for assistant coaches: all of whom have stellar reputations as college recruiters (with the exception of Kiffin's dad, Monte, who is formerly a career NFL man.)

Necessary evil or bad idea?

SI.com's Stewart Mandel thinks the Vols are setting a bad precedent, particularly in these recessionary times.

Check out Mandel's take on the situation here.
