UF-Miami basketball not likely to become a regular event
Florida recently turned down a proposal to play the Miami football series on a regular basis every other year, and most likely the Gators won't play the Hurricanes on the hardwood very often in the forseeable future.
The two played last Friday in the second round of the National Invitation Tournament, and Florida coach Billy Donovan said although he's not opposed to playing Miami, there are no negotiations currently underway to make that happen.
"We had talked about doing something with the Orange Bowl, and it's worked out and not worked out,'' Donovan said. "I'm not opposed to playing Miami and I don't think Frank (Haith, head coach) is opposed to playing us. But it just hasn't worked out for whatever reason.''
Donovan said among the discussions was the possibility of UF playing Miami in the Orange Bowl, then the two playing each other in Jacksonville, before going to a home-and-home series in the final two years of a possible four-year agreement.
"It wouldn't be bad for us,'' Donovan said. "We finished up a series with them a couple of years ago. I wouldn't be opposed to it, but I don't think there's anything on the table in the works right now to do something in the future.''
